Mexico cancels baseball season

Why was the professional baseball season in Mexico cancelled?

Of course you know the answer.

As the Associated Press explains,

The summer season had been scheduled to start Aug. 7, but the 16 team owners decided that they could not guarantee the safety of fans and players. 

Sporting events in Mexico have to be played without spectators due to the coronavirus pandemic. But for baseball, playing without fans would not have been economically feasible. 

Mexican baseball teams make much of their money from tickets and refreshments at stadiums. They do not have the large broadcast income that soccer teams do.

Jung-ho Kang. A name that many Pittsburgh Pirates baseball fans won’t forget, even if they wish they could.

He’d like to play baseball again. Yonhap picks up the story.

Kang left Incheon International Airport, just west of Seoul, at about 7 p.m. Friday. Following the requirement for all international arrivals during the coronavirus pandemic, Kang will enter a two-week quarantine.

According to Yonhap,

The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) announced that all 50 preseason games, scheduled to run from March 14 to 24, will be wiped out, as baseball joins a series of other sports in canceling or postponing key events for spring.

JAPAN TIMES: Japanese baseball fans not allowed to enter stadiums amid coronavirus outbreak

According to the Japan Times,

“This was a bitter decision to make. Because we can’t determine the situation, I won’t say anything right now about (opening day),” NPB Commissioner Atsushi Saito said. “If possible, we all want to go ahead on March 20.”
