Another reminder of what the First Amendment is about; Trump and Hawley should take note

Any social media platform that chooses to ban Donald Trump is not violating his free speech rights.

In addition, when a book publishing company announces it has opted not to publish Missouri senator Josh Hawley’s book, it is not violating his First Amendment rights.

As a friendly reminder, the First Amendment prevents a government entity from tossing you in jail (or worse) for writing or saying something the government doesn’t like.

That’s it. (The Amendment’s other elements aren’t considered here because they’re not relevant to these situations.)

A company may fire any employee for saying something that violates its standards. It may cancel your access to its social media platform. It may rip up a plan to publish your book.

So, go ahead and whine and cry all you want because your posters boys for hate are being sanctioned. But don’t be foolish and scream that their rights to free speech have been violated.

Below are the words to the First Amendment. Remember them:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
