On Tuesday, America will take the most important step in ridding itself of the scourge of Donald Trump’s presidency.
Joe Biden might not reach the necessary 270 (or more) Electoral College number on Election Night because roughly 100-million Americans already have voted. Multiple media reports have indicated a majority of those votes will be for Biden; they will be counted en masse in the days following the election. As a result, with no uniform standard for how states should count mail-in and absentee ballots, Biden’s victory will be assured later in the week.
I’d be much happier if the returns on Election Night provide Biden with those minimum 270 Electoral College votes. Nothing would make me happier than to see Trump get thumped.
Trump already has made clear that he’ll use whatever legal challenges he can to get votes tossed out. His tinpot, dictator-like style will be on display right up until he’s replaced on Jan. 20, 2021.
Trump will not accept defeat with grace or civility; he’s far more likely to call upon the most dangerous of his supporters to turn the streets into quasi-war zones. His (il)legitimacy will be predicated on the idea that Democrats (or Antifa or socialists or the Chinese or some combination of all of them) stole from him what he earned.
I’m trusting the American public to do the right thing and guarantee Biden will be next president of the United States.
