A second U.S. lockdown?

England is heading into another major national lockdown. Prime minister Boris Johnson made the announcement late Saturday night, suggesting the move was required to give the country a chance to prevent a dangerous hike in the number of coronavirus deaths.

The BBC outlined the restrictions that will go into place on Thursday.

Pubs, restaurants, gyms and non-essential shops will have to close for four weeks from Thursday, he said.

But unlike the restrictions in spring, schools, colleges and universities can stay open.

There’s every reason to believe the U.S. might face another national lockdown in the coming weeks. Coronavirus cases are exploding across the country, and we know the pandemic might very well combine with the flu to put the health care system under real threat.

A second lockdown wouldn’t be well received in the U.S. Many of the same fears expressed in the U.K. — rising unemployment, mental health challenges, separation from family and friends — would be discussed here. Would the federal government urge schools and universities remain open? How many teachers, from kindergarten through college, bail, fearing their own lives would be imperiled by remaining on the job? Would professional (come to think of it, high school and college) sports continue, as they will in the U.K?

The questions are clear; the answers are anything but. So, what do you think?

Will there be a second lockdown in the U.S?

If yes, what would the restrictions look like?

If not, why?

  1. Yes, I think there will be another shut down. I think they will wait until after the election because a shut down is not in popular opinion right now and I think either party would fear it would hurt their chances. With an increase in cases I think something will have to happen.

I doubt it will be a national plan (unless Biden wins, in which it will be after he is sworn in). My guess is it will be a few weeks similar to early yellow phase in PA to avoid too much strain on the economy. I think we will see more mask mandates and restrictions.
