Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but so far this summer only the City University of New York has announced faculty cuts that exceed the planned 96 at the University of Akron. (I’m not distinguishing between PT and FT positions.)
The Akron Beacon-Journal details what is unfolding at Akron.
“If the university did not make immediate, substantial cuts and didn’t see a significant increase in revenue, the reserve funding would be gone by the end of the year, Interim CFO Steve Storck said in a video to campus last week explaining the current financial situation. The university is expecting a 15% drop in enrollment.
Meanwhile, the Chronicle of Higher Ed reminds us that Akron has trimmed almost 25% of its faculty since the coronavirus pandemic began.
Sadly, we must anticipate more bad news to come, especially if colleges find they don’t meet their budgeted student head count number for the fall.
