Hajj is a pillar of Islam, a requirement for able-bodied Muslims who can afford to do it.

Hajj is an annual event, which brings Muslims to Mecca, Islam’s holiest city. But this year, the typical million-plus people event will be scaled back. Coronavirus is the reason.

Arab News has the details.

The decision was taken due to the ongoing threat from the coronavirus pandemic and to preserve “global public health,” the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah said.

Pilgrims taking part will be from various nationalities who already reside in Saudi Arabia.
