BREAKING: “Word of mouth” suggests as many as 15 faculty positions could be cut at U of Iowa

The Des Moines Register has the details.

Leadership at the CLAS did not respond to inquiries about how many faculty across the campus have been notified that their positions will be eliminated. But Loren Glass, UI chapter president of the American Association of University Professors, is keeping a count through word of mouth. By his estimate, the college will lose 15 faculty positions.

If I’m understanding the story correctly, the 15 positions are all in one college. That might mean other colleges at UI also will face faculty cuts.

The announcement comes o the same day Kean University faculty, alums and students announced a rally to protest planned cuts at that institution.

Meanwhile, efforts to hold off massive cuts in the CUNY system continue. But news of a drop in projected fall enrollment won’t help the cause.

BREAKING: Common and inexpensive drug might save people suffering from worst of coronavirus

The BBC has the details.

In the trial, lead by a team from Oxford University, around 2,000 hospital patients were given dexamethasone and were compared with more than 4,000 who did not get the drug.

For patients on ventilators it cut death risk from 40% to 28%. For patients needing oxygen it cut death risk from 25% to 20%.

Chief investigator Prof Peter Horby said: “This is the only drug so far that has been shown to reduce mortality and it reduces it significantly. It’s a major breakthrough.”

The Guardian has the details.

There is a complete disruption of the lung architecture – in some lights you can’t even distinguish that it used to be a lung.
